Transmitting the “texture of a threshold”, the mixed media designs that make up Tanya P Johnsonis in progress Engines of Wisdom series invoke the passage between wakefulness and sleep or life and death. Mirrored renderings tangle gears, levers, pulleys and audio equipment with flowers and geometric patterns in elongated columns, referencing the shape of the human spine. The bisected works reflect both a connection between entities and the search for balance through somatic experiences and symmetries.

Drawn on vintage paper, the pieces are “consciousness hacking tools,” says Johnson, instruments for confronting the systems we’re used to. Each work “generates subtle awareness, cultivates wisdom and dispels fear. They symbolize how movement and breath can be used to interrupt patterns, strengthen electromagnetism and stabilize energy.

Living between British Columbia and her hometown of Cape Town, Johnson works in all media, and you can find more of her projects at his website and instagram.
